The Revolutionary War

Battle of Lexington and Concord

Picture
Just after midnight on April 19, 1775, colonists in Lexington, MA were warned that "The Redcoats are coming!" Seventy-seven townsmen, who were members of the local militia, rushed to the green carrying guns. As the sun rose, three hundred British soldiers marched into view. When the British charged the colonists, a shot rang out. No one knows who fired this first shot, but it became known as the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." The battle was over in minutes. The British then marched to Concord, where they were driven off by a group of militiamen. After this, they began their retreat to Boston.

Why do you think it is called the "Shot Heard 'Round the World?"
